I know you probably don’t have time for the internet today and that’s how it should be! But just a quick post to announce I have my traditional Happy Holidays mix ready. This time it has a lot of boleros, sambas and all kinds of vintage canções. If you are having dinner with your elders, this would definitely make them happy and engaged!
And with that I’ve reactivated my Soundcloud account for a month (I’m cheapo) so if you need to stream my older mixes, the Ghost World or the Postcards series, now is your time!
Good luck in 2024. Onwards! X

IN HEAVY ROTATION
We’ve lost a dear friend this week, so I’ve fallen deeper into the Irish folk rabbit hole, like I’ve been going through a whole week of Irish wake! So only The Dubliners, The Pogues, Lankum, The Mary Wallopers and various other figures + different versions of the same canonical songs were on repeat. Check the links above + below for just a few of my finds. The rabbit hole is too deep!
A scene from Peter Lennon's "The Rocky Road To Dublin" (1968). The film was banned in Ireland until 2004, for criticising the church and state.
♩Irish folk artists on the creative genius of Shane MacGowan
“He was a genius and a true poet. He was brave and bold and wrote about the side of life that he saw. He was emotionally intelligent and socially informed. He had compassion and empathy for the underdog. And he didn’t really write about himself. He wrote about the point of view of others – people in poverty, homeless people, old people, hunger strikers, prostitutes and rent boys. Shane saw it all and he said it all.”
♩The Economics of Christmas Music
So, why has it been so long since a new Christmas hit has broken through? It’s not necessarily because the songs from earlier decades are objectively better. It’s likely a generational effect, where we inherit **[the Christmas tunes our parents loved as kids](https://www.wired.co.uk/article/christmas-music-nostalgia)**. Nostalgia is a powerful force, especially around Christmas.
Forgive them for they don’t know what they have done.
Forgive them almighty God, for they don’t know what they have done
An important tenet we can hopefully employ in 2024.
See you soon with a Best of 2023 post, ASAP.
Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! X
If you like what you read, share it with your friends, it does make me feel happy that what I write matters to people.
