Mondo Times: Lovers' Holiday
Durand Jones, Milkweed, Moor Mother & SUMAC, Donato Dozzy, Kneecap, Asa Horvitz et al, Glasto & Sonar. RIP Guy Klucevsek, RIP Brian Wilson
Hello all,
Of course I couldn’t keep my promise (to myself, not to you, dear readers, ‘cause I’m never sure if anyone is reading me at all). I can’t maintain a weekly/bi-weekly routine. The last two weeks were mainly Primavera Sound, Off Sonar and its collateral damage + family duties. And they were enough to have unfortunately stopped me from completing this one. So, some of the conversation around say Sonar might be dated now that it has concluded.
But conversely, and more importantly though, the conversation about Kneecap vs Israel (KKR, Superstruct, Business Techno, Capitalism) is still going on strong with Kneecap’s Mo Chara in court yesterday.
I don’t want to be a nuisance and I am pretty damn sure things will go back to business as the reach of capital and its financiers are too long, our attention spans are too low, and the normies are too uninformed, and there’s a vibe drought as Michelle Lhooq put it over at Rave New World.
So please, please, protest major labels & agencies, superstar DJs and headline artists who are complicit in genocide or the death of festivals, because of their bottomline & conformity. Don’t go to copycat festivals who are owned by private equity, which are filled with the same mega DJs.
These are the greedy bastards who have taken away the soul of music for their profit for decades. Just look at their sorry fuckin’ faces, these fuckin’ suits!
💀 Here’s a thread if you’ve been living under a rock and didn’t know about Kneecap.
👀 And here’s the official trailer for the 2024 movie of the same name
What I’ve been listening to since the last newsletter.
♩MILKWEED: Remscéla (Trad. Folk, Ambient, Beats) : Milkweed’s music is like stumbling upon a haunted folk record, familiar yet eerily warped. For Remscéla, their latest album, they dove into the Táin Bó Cúailnge, Ireland’s answer to Game of Thrones. Their sound incorporates acoustic instrumentation, distorted tape noise, and spoken-word vocals, creating an eerie yet captivating dream-like atmosphere.
♩DURAND JONES & THE INDICATIONS (Neo Soul): A summery single from the velvet voice of Durand Jones, from their upcoming album Flowers.
♩MOOR MOTHER and SUMAC (Experimental, Jazz, Avantgarde) : MM and Sumac get together for some deconstructed hip-hop over extreme soundscapes?
♩ASA HORVITZ et al: A very special experimental electronic album. Read the liner notes : Part experimental opera, part neo-Medieval reverie, and part avant-pop song cycle...
♩This fiyah French Zouk version of ‘Another Day In Paradise’ edited by none other than UK's Psychemagik will destroy your dancefloors!
I think I have forgotten to mention this before, I had made a Japanese ambient/electronic focused playlist for a local Istanbul bar/music venue operated by my friends.
It’s been a while since I enjoyed a DJ set, let alone a Boiler Room. Italian maestro Donato Dozzy’s 5+ hour performance is one of the few instances where you should watch somebody spinning records. Carmen Villain’s HÖR set is another.
🪦 RIP Guy Klucevsek: Multi-Genre Accordion Virtuoso, Is Dead at 78
🪦 RIP Brian Wilson / The Beach Boys:
Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys musician, songwriter and producer who created some of history’s most purely beautiful pop music, has died aged 82.
♩Twelve of Brian Wilson’s greatest songs – from surf to psychedelia and beyond
That’s it from me for now, but repeat after me one more time:
The money you spend attending festivals could be directly funding occupations & colonization, the construction of oil & gas pipelines & worse yet, the manufacture of weapons for war. send this to your friends who go to Boiler Room or fly to Europe for festivals. Make them aware of what they are actually supporting & funding.
