Ritmo Fantasia
Trujillo, Clariloops, Hiss Golden Messengers, Ithildin, Sagor & Swing, Newport Jazz, Ableton, Jose Mauro, UDW.
Ahoy there fellow travellers,
I’ve been sleeping on a few albums that I need to mention. Now that the end of the year is coming up and we’ll all be concentrating on EOY lists, there won’t be much time to focus on these in December. So without further ado!
So happy to see mi hermano Trujillo, Venezuela’s finest and the most hardworking digger in town *Berlin*, is getting the recognition he deserves with this amazing compilation on one of the best labels, Soundway! A unique window to Spanish musical history is opening, Ritmo Fantasía: Balearic Spanish Synth-Pop, Boogie and House (1982-1992)
Revelators is a new project from Hiss Golden Messenger’s M.C. Taylor and Spacebomb’s Cameron Ralston. Taylor refers to Revelators as “spiritual jazz and dub-influenced.” Positively surprising dub-work from an Americana/Folk artist.
Found on Ted Gioia’s newsletter, been sitting on this for a while:
Sun/Rain from Clariloops is a fascinating example. Most listeners would never guess that this is a solo clarinet album. But with the help of loops and software, composer Ruby Lulham of Australia creates extraordinary textures and soundscapes—clarinet sounds Benny Goodman never dreamed of. This is one of the freshest woodwind albums you will hear this year.
Cult Swedish weird folk/jazz duo Sagor & Swing reissues their 2002 album “Melodier och fåglar” with an English title “Melodies and Birds”. I’m a big fan of organist Eric Malmberg, and although S&S are inactive these days, they are very much the continuation of 70’s Swedish prog/folk acts like Kornet, Nya Ljudbolaget, Samla Mammas Manna, Bo Hansson, Hedningarna, Merit Hemmingson, Fläsket Brinner et al, which are all artists you should definitely check out!
If you still have enough capacity for weird synth/organ music after Sagor & Swing, this Dungeon-Synth futureclassic by Guillaume P. Trépanier aka Ithildin will assist you on your hauntological journeys in Middle Earth. Listen to Gandalf’s song, #3.
AROUND THE NET
♩Don’t be Spotify, be Ableton: Inside Ableton, the Music Software Company Everyone Wants to Buy.
Ableton started doing business in 1999, and at first, the software was a niche product. In 2000, the founders presented a prerelease version of Ableton Live at a Los Angeles trade show. As Henke once recalled, people said, “A laptop onstage? You guys are insane!”
Now it’s hard to imagine pop music without it.
♩That was the day I knew I had died… ’ José Mauro, Brazilian music’s reborn genius.
It was the summer of 1995 when José Mauro discovered he was dead. The Brazilian musician, then 46 years old, was living on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, teaching guitar, when a friend called from London saying he’d spotted a CD of Mauro’s long-deleted 1970 LP, Obnoxius, on sale in a London record shop.
“He called and explained about this CD, and about how it said I’d been killed in a motorcycle accident,” says Mauro today, now 72. “That was the day I knew I had died.”
♩This BBC debate with Joe Strummer of the The Clash and Rick Wakeman from Yes proves that NME legend Nick Kent was indeed “in the right place at the right time, on the wrong drugs”.
