Tropical Convergence
Pauline Anna Strom, Wau Wau Collectif, maassai in new Undomondo Discover Weekly also Tim Maia, Jose Padilla, Minyo Crusaders, Sound Storing Machines and more..
Hi there,
Let’s start with the fact that I’ve forgotten to mention that salsa pioneer Johnny Pacheco has passed away last month. This dust-to-digital segment with Celia Cruz, Tito Puente and Johnny Pacheco is amazing and sad at the same time, knowing that all three has passed away now.
Here’s another one from the most famous televised event of the 70’s, The Rumble in the Jungle, which is the well documented title boxing match/concert that brought together Muhammad Ali & George Foreman, James Brown, Miriam Makeba, Manu Dibango and more in Kinshasa, Congo. If you are intrigued, watch Soul Power.

Sublime Frequiencies has a new compilation series called Sound Storing Machines: The First 78rpm Records from Japan, 1903-1912.
It is a miracle what these fragile discs have survived: wars with Russia and China, the fire bombings (and worse) of World War II, modernization, the onslaught of Western media. They document, through a dreamlike haze of surface noise, a Japan that had just barely begun to open its doors to the rest of the world.
Including gagaku, shakuhachi, shamisen, storytelling, folksong and more. these recordings are a unique glimpse into an ancient culture and an important document of the beginnings of the recording industry. Digital Download available NOW.

A few highlights:
If you missed the Jazz is Dead series by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) you are in for a treat. The series had jazz legends like Roy Ayers, Marcos Valle, Doug Carn, Azymuth last year; and this piece is from the upcoming vol 5. on April featuring Gary Bartz.
Wau Wau Collectif is Swedish musician Karl-Jonas Winqvist and a bunch of local Senegalese musicians with traditional West African sounds and daring experimentation released on Sahel Sounds. This moody saxophone piece is extremely cinematic.
