Undomondo Newsletter: September
Hi all,
What a sorry year this 2020 has been.. We've lost so many lives, including musicians, some of which could have been prevented, if we had been better prepared. Like Toots of Toots and The Maytals fame who has been showing COVID-19 symptoms. (Watch this wonderful concert from 1975 to commemorate him) and Simeon of Silver Apples, a total anomaly in musical evolution, if ever there were one.
[If you aren't acquainted with Silver Apples, do yourself a favour and check their music, and watch this short documentary: Electro-Glitch Pop in the 1960s: The Unreal Sounds & Story of Silver Apples.]
In the last couple of months, like everyone on the cool net, I've been delving ever deeper into City Pop, the 80's urban disco/pop sound from Japan, which is being revived in the Western Hemisphere since a few years. Check this perfect 1 sec video-loop for Anri made by Synth City Smooth. Of course, the irony is not many in Japan knows anything about City Pop. Another genre created/appropriated for your enjoyment by Western men (?) :)
The newest jam packed edition of Undomondo Discover Weekly (my main Spotify playlist) this week is akin to a best of 2020 for Indie Rock, Punk, Indie Dance and similar. I've been listening to some of these since the beginning of the year but couldn't incorporate them into the previous playlists.
So this loose grouping:
Starts from the soulful end with Aladean Kheroufi, The Orielles going into indie territory WOODS, Torres, TOPS, Tim Koh, Lea Porcelain, Paint punk Fontaines D.C., Moaning, No Age, Viagra Boys, experimental indie/dance/electronic Wood River, TFS, Art Feynman, LA PRIEST, Field Music, best album of the year HUM ❤, The Lovely Eggs, Animal Collective, Soccer96 Alabaster dePlume and more..
Some of these like HUM's Inlet and Charlotte Greve's Wood River, WILL definitely make my end of year lists as albums, but most of these songs will be in rotation for some time!
As always Enjoy! Check back next week for more! Share with your friends! Undomondo Discover Weekly
